Vintage Hand-Carved Horn Sculpture Folk Art Eagle, Chihuahua Mexico. This handsome eagle sculpture is an excellent example of the horn sculpture that is sometimes found in the cattle country of West Texas, Southern New Mexico and Chihuahua State, Mexico along the Southwest border. These handmade items include horn hat racks, furniture with complex horn legs, backs and decorations and small items such as jewelry, combs and various tabletop sculptures. These items were often embellished with incised carving, inked decoration, and cut-out animal forms. I've seen 2 horn hat racks embellished with horn vases and flowers, both of which were signed Juarez, Mexico.
This example was created from steamed, shaped, and cut-out steer horn with an unshaped part of horn serving as the base. The wings were made separately, are incised with details of the feathers and mortised through the upper torso. The legs and tail are integral with the torso and are mortised through the base. The feet and talon details are carved into the base. The head and beak are well carved from the solid material of the tip of the horn.
The artist carefully matched the changes in the color of the horn in both of the wings, doing the same with the tip of the tail. This excellent folk art eagle sculpture strongly suggests movement and power. No breaks, cracks, repairs or other damage.Has a nice old patina and minor wear commensurate with age. Dimensions: 8" long, 7" tall, 5 maximum width (at wingtips). This item is in the category "Collectibles\Cultures & Ethnicities\Latin American\Mexico\Folk Art".
