I'm not sure what kind of wood was used, but it's truly beautiful, so clean, almost white (could be alder) and these really don't need any paint or stain. The carving is so deep and detailed, close to perfection, clearly carved by a master of this art with so much talent. 9" x 4" x 1/2, salmon is a little less.
Each is carved in front, signed at the back, made and prepared for wall hanging. Gino (Eugene) Seward was born in 1972 in. He is of both Coast Salish (father) and Kwakwakawakw (mother) descent. Gino began carving at the age of eleven and was taught by his Salish grandfather and by the Kwakiutl master carvers Jackson and William Robertson.
Gino prefers to carve in both red and yellow cedar, which he uses to create finely, detailed plaques and amazing freestanding totems. Gino, now considered to be a master carver, has taken on two apprentices (Danny Puglas and Sammy Seward) and is proud to aid in the preservation of his cultures artistic traditions.
