Early carvers took advantage of the area's plentiful forests to create lots of interesting objects. But the real boost for this craft industry was tourism.
About 200 years ago, around 1820, the first tourists arrived. And the people in Brienz, who had a really tough life before that, found out that they could sell products to them. Today, the only woodcarving school of Switzerland is still in Brienz. The pair of eagles we offer you here have a typical rustic charm that makes them very desirable.
We bought them at an antiques shop not far from Brienz. They are nicely heavy and measure 4" high x 4" long and 3½ wide (12 x 10 x 9 cm). The color of the wooden bases the eagles are resting on is not exactly the same although it is undoubtedly a pair, but it is not really disturbing as they should hold a row of books between them. They are in excellent vintage condition and. If you like carved wood, don't let these birds fly away!
