Indonesian Eagle Sculpture Hibiscus Wood Hand-Carved Folk Art Bali 1980s. This original wooden sculpture is carved in the shape of a golden eagle in traditions of the ancient Balinese art of wood carving. A highly skilled craftsman captured every detail characteristic of the noble bird of prey with its fierce eye look, sharp hooked beak, covered in heavy feathering strong legs and large powerful talons. With almost 8 feet wingspan the golden eagle is reputedly the best flier among all raptorial birds and can reach 200 miles per hour when it swoops down after prey. There has been endless fascination and deep reverence for this majestic bird since times of early civilizations.
In Indonesian culture the golden eagle is closely linked to Garuda (Sanskrit:), a divine bird or birdlike creature common to both Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Garuda is the carrier vahana of Lord Vishnu, a major deity of Hinduism. In Java and Bali Garuda symbolises the virtue of knowledge, power, bravery, loyalty, and discipline.
He is also represented as the main part of the national emblem of Indonesia Garuda Pancasila. The sculpture is hand-carved from a single piece of hardwood of the Hibiscus tiliaceus tree native to the Old World tropics. In Balinese it is called Waru Taluh and common names in English include sea hibiscus , coastal cottonwood and.
This expensive wood is reserved for smaller intricate sculptures and for carving the sacred masks. The fine texture left by shallow gouges gives the golden eagle a realistic appearance, and natural grains of hibiscus wood in ivory colour with light and dark brown streaks create a vivid impression of a real bird. The sculpture was made in a village of Mas of Ubud District in Gianyar Regency, Bali, Indonesia, and it dates back to the 1980s.
It is pleasantly tactile and has acquired a patina of age. Is in excellent vintage condition (please see the pictures). Height: 20.0 cm (7.87 in). Length:12.7 cm (5.0 in). Width: 10.3 cm (4.06 in).
