This completely handmade Antique intricately detailed 3-dimensionally hand carved Eagle & coiled Rattlesnake riding crop / baton / swagger stick with fancy 3-dimensional silver embossed ferrule and fine leather appointments, dating from the late 1800's to the Mexican Revolution period. This is a hefty piece; about 28 1/4 long weighing 11.8 oz. With the fine wooden shaft tapering from about 1" diameter to 3/4" at the end.
The exquisitely hand carved top is about 5 tall, including the 3-dimensionally embossed silver ferrule. The front to back measurement is about 1 3/4. The carving shows detail in the Eagles eyes, beak, wing feathers and claw holding down the snake head. The rattle snake is coiled around the textured cactus top and has 8 rattles to its tail: a large older snake. The ferrule has 3-dimensionally embossed scroll and leaf patterns with a band at the top and bottom; unmarked, and so is probably made from coin silver. The finely round braided 1/4" diameter dark tan calf skin leather wrist loop is about 7 1/8" long, with a flat braided 5/8 calf skin leather band attaching it to the wooden shaft. The tan colored wooden shaft is in fine condition, with the original lacquer or varnish. The shaft end has a wide tan leather popper with a V cut out, tooled border, and is affixed with a 1 7/8 wide flat braided calf skin band, en suite. This is a most interesting piece. It appears it started out in life as a fine 19th Century sculptured Eagle & Rattlesnake silver mounted cane that would have been custom made and commissioned by a wealthy Gentleman of means; and later professionally converted into a quirt befitting a Cowboy / Vaquero; or also used as a swagger stick / baton as could be carried by a High ranking Military Officer.
This fine, fancy piece has nice, untouched aged patina overall and is in excellent condition. This completely handmade piece, and the leather overall has seen noticeably light usage; and is in fine, untouched, as found condition.
This is certainly usable today as is and could also easily be recrafted and restored as a fine carved Eagle silver mounted cane if desired. The owner stated he obtained it over 20 years ago from an old timer in his 80s who was a stunt man in the 1950s, bought it in Mexico, and made it into a quirt for his own use. This would also perfect as a conversation piece, decorator, wall hanger, hung on a saddle horn, or for any quirt, crop, whip, Baton, Swagger Stick, Military, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Vaquero, Buckaroo, SASS, Old West, Western, Charro, Charrita, Wild West, Parade, Carved Folk Art, Western Americana or Western Mexicana display.BANK DRAFTS DRAWN ON A U.
